The Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, was founded by archaeologist and collector Henry Chapman Mercer to preserve the tools, crafts, and everyday objects of preindustrial life as modern industry displaced them. Mercer assembled a wide-ranging collection in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and designed the museum himself as a six-story poured-in-place concrete building, completed in 1916, intended to be fireproof. Operated by the Bucks County Historical Society, the museum also includes a research library and stands with Fonthill and the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works as one of Mercer’s distinctive concrete landmarks dedicated to preserving material culture.
