Buckingham Mountain, known in Lenape as Pepacating, rises in Buckingham Township in central Bucks County, Pennsylvania, to 520 feet, making it the county’s second-highest point. Its significance also rests on the history at its summit, where Mount Gilead African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1835 by runaway slaves and rebuilt in stone in 1852. The church became one of the more prominent refuges for runaway slaves in southeastern Pennsylvania, tying the mountain to freedom-seeking communities and the Underground Railroad.
