This burial ground was the resting place of Yankee and English settlers. It was first called Dixon or East Side Cemetery. The site also held the first Dixon school house, which was burned and relocated south of North Avenue in the 1860s. John Dixon deeded the land in 1850, the Brookfield Cemetery Association operated it in 1851, and its name was changed to Pioneer Cemetery in 1854.
