Saratoga's first school house, a two-room framed building, was constructed in 1869 at the top of Fourth Street. As enrollment increased, an up-to-date wooden building with a bell tower was built in 1897. The first unit of today's building was erected in 1923 and contained a library, auditorium, and cafeteria. Although the school's outside appearance has changed little, the entire structure was renovated in the early 1970's to make it safer in the event of an earthquake. The auditorium later gave way to the Mendelssohn Memorial Media Center, and the now silent bell from the 1897 school stands in front as a reminder of the school's history.
