The Museum of Early Trades and Crafts in Madison, New Jersey, preserves the state’s pre-industrial history through more than 8,000 tools and artifacts used before 1860. Founded in 1969, it grew from a collection assembled by Agnes and Edgar Land as mechanization and suburban development led to the loss of older farm and craft equipment. Its home, the former Madison Public Library or James Building, was completed in 1900 as a gift from D. Willis James and is a notable Romanesque Revival structure on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum also brings earlier New Jersey trades to life through demonstrations of traditional skills.
