Along the Truckee Trail’s Forty Mile Desert, emigrants crossed a harsh landscape of dust and glittering sand, traveling before sunrise with their teams and encountering occasional graves, little forage, and dead livestock. John Clark of Virginia recorded such conditions there on August 21, 1852.
