An early fort was established here in 1783 by settlers in Boyd's Creek Valley, led by Revolutionary Captain Samuel Newell. Sevier County, in the state of Franklin, held its first court here. It was also the seat of government for the South-of-French-Broad-and-Holston people from 1789 to 1791, and their "Articles of Association" were adopted here in 1789.
