La Paz in Keene, California, preserves the headquarters of the United Farm Workers and the home of César Chávez from the early 1970s until his death in 1993. Before its central role in the farmworker movement, the property had served as a quarry headquarters and housing area, then as the Stony Brook Sanitorium. Established as a national monument in 2012 and also designated a National Historic Landmark that day, the site includes the gardens where César Chávez and his wife, Helen Fabela Chávez, are buried. Its continuing use as a memorial, workplace, and family residence gives it a living connection to the history of farm labor organizing in the United States.
