Tomo-Kahni State Historic Park in Tehachapi, Kern County, preserves the site of a former Kawaiisu settlement whose name means “winter home” in the Kawaiisu language. Rich local resources made it a favorable place to live and a place of protection during the colder season. The landscape still holds evidence of long Kawaiisu occupation, including many bedrock mortars and an important body of rock art created by the Native community there. California designated the site a state historic park in 1993 with the agreement of elderly tribal members, recognizing its importance as a preserved Kawaiisu settlement and a vital part of Native California history.
