History

For 53 years Madison County operated an establishment one-half mile to the south where the indigent, lame, and unfortunate were housed in a series of log buildings. Each year a superintendent and a physician were appointed to care for their needs. For many paupers this became their final resting place. Today, the only visible remains of the facility are the depressions which indicate hundreds of unmarked graves in the pasture and wooded areas. The cemetery and 123 acres of the original farm were added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on November 2, 1990.
