The Podunks are the traditional people of this land. Land acknowledgements are a way to insert awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights into everyday life, often at the beginning of ceremonies, lectures, or education guides. They offer an explicit yet limited recognition of the history of colonialism and first nations, as well as a need for change in settler-colonial societies. The Native Lands map is intended for educational purposes, is imperfect, and does not represent official or legal boundaries of any Indigenous nations; definitive boundaries should be learned from the nation itself.
