Shenipsit State Forest spans 11 parcels in Somers, Ellington, and Stafford in northeastern Connecticut, serving both as a working forest and a recreation area. Managed for protected landscape values and forestry products, it also contains the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum at its headquarters, with memorabilia from CCC camps across the eastern United States. The forest’s rugged terrain includes ridges and hills rising well above surrounding land, with Soapstone Mountain as its highest point wholly within the forest at 1,075 feet. Shaped by glacial remains and once used for a Colonial-era soapstone quarry, the forest is crossed by the 40-mile Shenipsit Trail and supports varied outdoor activities.
