Willow Grove Mine was toured by Eleanor Roosevelt. In 1940, a mine explosion claimed 73 lives. Mining first started in this country in 1795 when William Boggs started a coal bank. In 1830, Mike Fink was the first one to float down the Ohio River. Coal was thought to be the largest business in eastern Ohio.
