Covered bridges once dotted northeast Ohio, a building tradition brought from New England by early settlers of the Connecticut Western Reserve, and today Ashtabula County holds the largest concentration in the area, with eighteen covered bridges ranging from rustic nineteenth-century spans to modern engineering works. The county includes examples of Town Lattice, Howe Truss, Burr Arch, Pratt Truss, Inverted Haupt, and Kingpost construction, and features both the longest covered bridge in the United States and a planned shortest functioning covered bridge in Geneva. Some bridges date to the 1850s, six have been built since 1983, and together they reflect both preservation and renewal across the county’s hills and river valleys. Each autumn, Ashtabula County celebrates this heritage with the Covered Bridge Festival in Jefferson.
