As Franco-Americans sought another church, Bishop Heley and Father Pierre-Emmanuel Dupont of St. Joseph's Church established St. André's Church in 1899 and called Rev. Louis Bergeron of Fairfield, Maine, to organize it. The decree of division was signed on the patronal feast day of St. Andrew, November 30, 1899. While the new church was being built, the first mass was held in the basement of St. Joseph's Church, and St. André's parish celebrated its first high mass in its own church on Christmas Day 1900. The new parish included the eastern part of the city from Foss Street, including Main Street and Saco. The church was built in the Romanesque style and has no inside pillars. Msgr. Arthur Décary played an important role through his long association with the parish, and his brother Zénon was a beloved faith healer.
