Wood Island Light stands on Wood Island in Saco Bay near the mouth of the Saco River on Maine’s southern coast. Established in 1808 under President Thomas Jefferson, it is Maine’s second-oldest lighthouse and the eleventh-oldest in the United States. After the first wooden tower deteriorated, the present granite tower was built in 1839, with later updates including a Fresnel lens, automation, and modern beacons. Its history includes keeper Eben Emerson’s 1865 rescue of a British brig’s crew, the well-known tale of keeper Thomas Henry Orcutt’s dog Sailor ringing the fog bell, and local legends that later inspired claims of haunting.
