Northcentral Pennsylvania's Lumber Heritage Region is a landscape of deep forests, navigable rivers, abundant wildlife, historic communities, and outdoor recreation spread across roughly two million acres of public lands. For thousands of years, these natural assets drew people to the region, and in the 1800s settlers discovered its timber, oil, and coal wealth, leading vibrant communities to take root from Williamsport to Clarion and from Bradford to Boalsburg. Its rivers and forests were central to a lumbering past marked by immense log drives on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, logging railroads, and places such as Cross Fork, which in 1897 was reported to be third in lumber production in Pennsylvania before becoming a ghost town by 1920. Today the region offers wildlife habitat for elk, black bear, fisher, otter, deer, and bald eagle, while visitors explore places such as the Allegheny River, Pine Creek Gorge, Bellefonte's historic district, old-growth forests, mountain streams, scenic byways, museums, artisan shops, and lumber festivals, alongside an ongoing appreciation for sustainable forestry and wood products.
