In October 1864, recruitment officer Col. Cyrus Butler was shot and killed by local draft resister Joseph Lounsberry just west of this location. Afterwards, the government sent troops to the county and arrested over 150 men. This included the Bloody Knox incident, when another soldier and deserter were killed.
