Kopernik Observatory and Science Center in Vestal, New York, opened to the public on June 16, 1974, as a community observatory created by the Kopernik Society of Broome County to honor the 500th anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus’s birth and make astronomy directly accessible to the public. Originally a 2,500-square-foot facility with two telescope domes, it later expanded into a larger science education center with classrooms, laboratories, and a theater. Through public observing sessions, school outreach, camps, and annual events, it has emphasized hands-on science education, especially for students, teachers, and families, while remaining a working public observatory with notable telescopes and broad regional importance.
