SS Tahoe was the largest Lake Tahoe steamer, built for an era when shoreline hotels and communities relied on steamship service. Ordered by Duane Leroy Bliss, fabricated in San Francisco, and reassembled at Glenbrook for launch in 1896, it combined advanced engineering with luxurious accommodations for passengers, freight, and mail. From 1901 it made a regular summer circuit around the lake, but improved roads and the loss of its mail contract made it uneconomical. Scuttled off Glenbrook in 1940 as a planned memorial, it slid into deep water instead. Later exploration and documentation established the wreck as an important archaeological site and Nevada’s first National Register maritime site.
