Cave Rock is a volcanic andesite formation on the shore of Lake Tahoe near Stateline, Nevada, where U.S. Route 50 now passes through tunnels beneath it. Formed as the hardened core of an ancient volcanic vent and later hollowed by wave action when the lake stood much higher, it has long been both a natural barrier and a route for travel. For the Washoe people it is a sacred Traditional Cultural Property associated with shamanic tradition. Wagon trails, a trestle bridge, tunnels, and later disputes over rock climbing all reflect its continuing importance, recognized nationally in 2017.
