Revolutionary War hero John “Jack” Jouett, Jr., who is buried in Bath County, rode forty miles on June 3, 1781, to warn Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and other legislators of the British approach. Jack Jouett of Virginia galloped all night from Cuckoo Tavern to Monticello to Charlottesville. He moved to Kentucky in 1782 and later represented Mercer County in the Virginia Assembly, and Mercer and Woodford counties in the Kentucky Assembly.
