Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is a Colorado state park along the Arkansas River in central Colorado, extending about 148 miles from Leadville to Pueblo Reservoir near Pueblo West. Managed jointly by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the Bureau of Land Management, and the United States Forest Service, it includes more than 25 developed recreation sites and fishing easements, with headquarters in Salida. The river’s steep drop through this corridor creates Class II to Class V rapids that have made it one of the country’s leading whitewater destinations. The area also supports fishing, hiking, camping, wildlife viewing, biking, horseback riding, climbing, gold panning, and seasonal winter recreation.
