Hunts Peak is a 13,071-foot summit in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Range, within the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness on the boundary of Fremont and Saguache counties. One of Fremont County’s highest points, it is visible from Highway 285 near Poncha Pass and is marked by especially steep local relief, rising sharply above Hunts Lake. The mountain also stands along a divide between major drainage basins, with runoff flowing west to San Luis Creek and east toward the Arkansas River. Its name, officially adopted in 1906, honors Alexander Cameron Hunt, Colorado Territory’s fourth governor, and the peak is now chiefly valued as a prominent high wilderness summit in the southern Rockies.
