Soldier's Retreat was the home of Colonel Richard C. Anderson, 1750-1826, an American Revolution patriot who served as an aide to Lafayette, was wounded at the sieges of Trenton and Savannah, was captured at Charleston, and fought at Yorktown, where Lord Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in 1781, completing the Revolution. Anderson married Elizabeth Clark, sister of General George Rogers Clark, and his second wife was Sarah Marshall, cousin of Chief Justice John Marshall. Completed by Anderson in 1794 with massive limestone walls more than two feet thick, the house served as a refuge from possible Indian attack. The homestead was later damaged by the 1811 earthquake and by lightning in 1840, then dismantled. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, Soldier's Retreat was reconstructed by L. Leroy Highbaugh, Jr.
