Perkins Opera House, erected in 1890 by John H. Perkins, a Monticello merchant and patron of the theatre, was a landmark of American music where touring theatrical, musical, and community performances were presented until 1928. Its upstairs auditorium seated 600 persons and was among the largest in Florida at the turn of the century.
