Robber's Roost was a popular outlaw hideout along the Outlaw Trail in southeastern Utah. Between the Colorado, Green, and Dirty Devil Rivers, it was a savage stretch of land crisscrossed with steep-walled canyons, hidden ravines, and flat top mountains. Its difficult terrain made it a refuge for outlaws of every sort, including Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch. It gained a reputation for being impenetrable, and stories about its defenses contributed to its legend. An intricate system of fortifications and a vast storehouse of supplies ensured that few lawmen dared enter the area. The roost was largely abandoned about 1900 when Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid allegedly departed for South America.
