Shattuck Observatory, built in 1854 at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, is the campus’s oldest scientific building and an early astronomical observatory that has remained largely unchanged since the mid-nineteenth century. Designed for professor Ira Young by Ammi B. Young and G.J.F. Bryant, it was financed by George Cheyne Shattuck Sr. and Dartmouth’s trustees. The brick structure, set on granite-block foundations, is distinguished by three wings around a two-story dome. Its instruments have included several telescopes and a meridian circle, and one of its most notable directors was Edwin Brant Frost. Today it serves mainly for teaching and public stargazing.
