Union Village Covered Bridge in the rural village of Union Village in Thetford, Vermont, carries Academy Road over the south-flowing Ompompanoosuc River. Built in 1867, it is Vermont’s longest surviving nineteenth-century multiple kingpost truss bridge and one of only two surviving nineteenth-century covered bridges in Thetford. The single-span wooden bridge rests on original dry-laid stone abutments later faced or capped in concrete, with vertical board siding, square window openings, and a standing-seam metal roof. Its floor system was reinforced over time, and a major rehabilitation in 2002–2003 helped preserve a structure valued for both its engineering and its place in the state’s covered-bridge heritage.
