Smith Point County Park is a large beachfront park on the east end of Fire Island along Long Island’s south shore near Shirley, New York. The largest park owned by Suffolk County, it is a major summer destination for surfing, fishing, camping, and beachgoing, reached by the Smith Point Bridge and serving as a gateway to the eastern end of Fire Island National Seashore. Its name ultimately traces to 17th-century landowner William “Tangier” Smith. The park also includes the TWA Flight 800 International Memorial for those killed in the 1996 crash offshore and stands at the boundary between developed recreation facilities and the protected coastal wilderness of eastern Fire Island.
