Cupsogue Beach County Park is a 296-acre barrier-beach park on Long Island’s south shore, between Fire Island and Westhampton Island, with both Atlantic oceanfront and Moriches Bay access. Its name comes from a Native American word from the 1690s meaning “a closed inlet.” The landscape was transformed after a 1931 nor'easter opened Moriches Inlet, which widened further in the 1930s. Suffolk County acquired the land in the 1950s, and by the 1970s it had become a developed public shore park. Along with swimming, fishing, diving, and camping, it includes preserved habitat for federally protected piping plovers and has repeatedly been reshaped and rebuilt after major storms and fire.
