Shadow Mountain Lookout, near the summit of Shadow Mountain in Grand County, Colorado, overlooks Grand Lake within Rocky Mountain National Park and is the park’s only surviving fire lookout. Completed in 1932 by the National Park Service with Civilian Conservation Corps labor, it was designed in the Rustic style to blend into its mountain setting. Its lower two stories are stone masonry rising from a rock outcrop, topped by a framed observation level with a pyramidal roof. The building also served visitors and housed employees seasonally until 1978, surviving as a rare remnant of the park’s early fire-detection system and 1930s architecture.
