The St. Leonard Garden of Remembrance began in the spring of 1990 as a project of a committee of the St. Leonard Area Citizens Association, led by Marie Andrews, to create a place in the St. Leonard Town Center honoring those who died at the nearby intersections of route 2/4, those who had contributed to the community, and others held dear by residents. By July 1990, Andrews, aided by Barbara Cantor, Betty Gross, Ken Jackson, Pat Meagher, Mary Smolinski, and Nancy Zinn, had developed a concept placing the Road and Garden of Remembrance in front of the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire and Rescue Station and on Calvert Beach Road, and on November 7, 1990, more than 100 residents volunteered to plant trees, shrubs, daffodils, and an avenue of 22 golden rain trees. Books of Remembrance were created so individuals could honor loved ones or note family milestones. In 1993, after the restored historic St. Leonard Polling House was moved to county land on St. Leonard Road, route 765, and the fire and rescue station needed to expand onto the original garden site, the garden was relocated to the Polling House property to form the St. Leonard Polling House Park and Garden of Remembrance, with trees from the original garden and additional cherry trees replanted there. Mary Alves, a garden designer specializing in historic sites, worked with Andrews, her committee, and county representatives to plan a larger garden centered on an hourglass-shaped walkway symbolizing the passage of time, with a sundial in memory of Kirsten Russell at the far end. The garden included themed areas for Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams and Margaret Mackall Smith Taylor, two First Ladies with family ties to the St. Leonard area, as well as a Fragrance Garden and a Butterfly Garden, and local citizens donated benches and commemorative bricks. In early 1994, a Memorandum of Understanding between the association and the Calvert County Commissioners established the garden and Polling House grounds as an official historic park for the community, and the park and garden were dedicated on September 6, 1994, followed by a community celebration on October 15, 1994; the grounds continue to be maintained jointly by Calvert County and volunteer gardeners.
