Built between 1856 and 1860 by Edward Brown Young and his wife, Ann Fendall Beall, Fendall Hall was one of the first great Italianate style homes constructed in Eufaula. It later became the home of their daughter, Anna Beall Young, and her husband, Stouten Hubert Dent, who renovated it in the 1880s in the styles and colors then popular and hired Mr. LaFranc to stencil and paint the ceilings and walls of the hall, parlor, and dining room; these rooms are among the finest surviving examples of this work in Alabama. Other distinctive original features included a black and white marble floored entrance hall and a plumbing system fed by attic cisterns. The house remained home to five generations of Youngs and their descendants before the Alabama Historical Commission acquired the property in 1973, and it was entered on the National Register of Historic Places on July 28, 1970. Edward Brown Young, a native of New York City, settled in Eufaula in 1837 with Ann Fendall Beall of Warren County, Georgia, and became a banker, merchant, and entrepreneur who organized the company that built the first bridge across the Chattahoochee River at Eufaula, founded banks and other commercial enterprises, served as first chairman of the trustees of Union Female College, and sponsored changing the town’s name from Irwinton to Eufaula. Anna Beall Young married Stouten Hubert Dent, who was born in Charles County, Maryland, moved to Eufaula in 1854, taught school, practiced law, served during the War Between the States as a captain commanding Dent's Alabama Battery in the Army of Tennessee, was wounded at Shiloh and near Nashville and Atlanta, and after the war resumed law practice, became president of the Eufaula National Bank, served as a trustee of what is now the University of Montevallo, and was a delegate to the Alabama Constitutional Convention of 1901.
