Champe Rocks are two large quartzite crags in eastern West Virginia within the Spruce Knob–Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. Rising from Champe Knobs at 2,257 feet above sea level, they are among the region’s most striking white and gray Tuscarora quartzite formations and part of the sharp ridges of the River Knobs. The rocks are named for Sergeant Major John Champe, the Revolutionary War soldier chosen by George Washington for a failed attempt to help capture Benedict Arnold after his betrayal; Champe later settled nearby. Though visible from West Virginia Route 28 and known as a climbing challenge, the crags are rarely climbed because there is no direct public access without crossing private property.
