The Georges Valentine Shipwreck Site off Hutchinson Island preserves the remains of an iron-hulled vessel whose career reflected changing maritime technology and trade. Built in England in 1869 as the steamship Cape Clear, it later became the Georges Valentine after its sale to a Bordeaux firm and conversion to a three-masted barkentine. By the 1890s it was carrying lumber from Pensacola to South America under Genoese ownership. On a voyage to Buenos Aires with milled mahogany in October 1904, the ship was driven north by a storm, wrecked in the shallows off Hutchinson Island, and lost five crewmen. The site is now protected as a historic place and underwater preserve.
