On September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center killed 2,753 people, including 343 members of the FDNY, 23 members of the NYPD, and 37 members of the PAPD. The dead included FDNY members who made the supreme sacrifice in the performance of duty at the World Trade Center, and a piece of steel was recovered from what remained of the site after the attack.
