On February 3, 1943, the S. S. Dorchester was torpedoed. As it sank, four chaplains gave their life jackets so that four soldiers might live, and they were seen linked arm in arm, heads uplifted in prayer: Lt G. L. Fox, Protestant; Lt. J. P. Washington, Catholic; Lt. A. D. Goode, Jewish; and Lt. C. V. Poling, Protestant.
