Rockaway Beach and Boardwalk is one of New York City’s longest continuous public seaside spaces, stretching along the south shore of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens with beaches, dunes, recreation areas, and neighborhood access points. The Rockaways grew into a major resort district in the 19th century, and the modern city-owned boardwalk was built in stages from 1923 to 1963. Large-scale beach engineering, jetties, and nourishment projects have helped counter erosion, while protected dune and piping plover habitat remain along the shore. Rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy, the boardwalk also serves as a neighborhood park and includes a memorial to the victims of American Airlines Flight 587.
