Mount Pisgah, in York County, Pennsylvania, rises above the Susquehanna River as a prominent overlook with sweeping views across the lower Susquehanna Valley. Named for the biblical mountain associated with Moses's first view of the Promised Land, it has long been valued as a natural observation point rather than for great height alone. Its prominence comes from the resistant quartzite of the Chickies Formation beneath it, part of a landscape shaped by folded and faulted metamorphic rocks formed from older sedimentary layers about 600 to 450 million years ago. The summit's outlook also reveals how terrain influenced movement, settlement, and economic development along the river corridor.
