Fourteen Foot Bank Light stands in Delaware Bay off Delaware near Bowers Beach at the south end of Joe Flogger Shoal, about 11 miles offshore in an unusually isolated setting. Built in 1885 and 1886, it was the first lighthouse constructed with a pneumatic caisson, making it a notable engineering achievement. Its wooden caisson was excavated 23 feet below the seabed and filled with 2,000 cubic yards of concrete, supporting a cast-iron base and house-like superstructure. Designed and built by prominent firms, it remains significant both as a navigational aid and as an important example of late-19th-century offshore marine construction.
