Elbow of Cross Ledge Light stood in Delaware Bay off New Jersey, marking the north side of the ship channel where the elbow of Cross Ledge shoal forced a slight turn. Built to replace the older Cross Ledge Light as shipping patterns changed, it faced delays from failed bidding and a destructive 1907 storm before first showing light in 1910. Its exposed position near the channel made it valuable to mariners but prone to collisions. After severe storm damage in 1951, the light was automated, and in 1953 the freighter Steel Apprentice destroyed most of the structure. A steel skeleton tower later replaced it on the same foundation.
