Miah Maull Shoal Light stands in Delaware Bay off southern New Jersey, marking a difficult stretch of channel for ships entering and leaving the bay. The shoal was named for river pilot Nehemiah Maull, who drowned there in 1780. Planned with Elbow of Cross Ledge Light as part of replacing Cross Ledge Light, the lighthouse faced years of construction and funding delays before its superstructure was finished in 1913. It later shifted from a French Fresnel lens to newer equipment and was automated in 1973. As the last offshore lighthouse built in Delaware Bay, it endures as a rare survivor of waterborne beacon stations.
