Haskell Noyes Memorial Woods preserves a scientific area in natural condition for future generations and symbolizes the spirit of Haskell Noyes of Milwaukee, who lived from 1886 to 1948 and was one of Wisconsin's foremost conservationists. A leader of citizen action for outdoor programs featuring youth participation, he served as chairman of the Wisconsin Conservation Commission from 1931 to 1933 and as a member from 1928 to 1933. As president of the Milwaukee Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America in 1926, when it purchased the Mauthe Lake area for conservation use, he was instrumental in its transfer to the people of Wisconsin in 1936 for Kettle Moraine State Forest. He also sponsored the Voluntary Sportsmen’s License and the Eagle Scout Forestry Camp and donated a traditional award for faithful, able service to Wisconsin’s Conservation Wardens.
