Chouteau's Post

Chouteau's Post was the oldest permanent American settlement in the state. It grew out of Chouteau's fur trade at St. Louis with the Osages after they settled this region in 1802 from Missouri. Improvements here in 1817 became the residence of Col. A.P. Chouteau, a West Point graduate noted in western U.S. official life and for many posts in Indian trade.
