At the Battle of Cabin Creek on Sept. 19, 1864, Confederate forces under Brig. Gen. Stand Watie's First Indian Brigade and Brig. Gen. Richard M. Gano's Texas Cavalry Brigade, with part of Howell's Battery, attacked a Federal wagon train valued at $1,500,000 on the Military Road to Fort Gibson. The Federal forces were under Captain Henry Hopkins and included the 2nd Kansas Cavalry and detachments of the 6th and 14th Kansas Cavalry and the 2nd and 3rd Indian Home Guard. At Big Cabin Creek, the Confederates captured 130 wagons and 740 mules, all heavily loaded with commissary supplies.
