Franklin County honors the loyalty and service of its volunteer fire departments, police agencies, sheriff, state police, emergency medical services, rescue units, and emergency management personnel, and remembers those killed in the line of duty. Fireman Robert L. King Jr. and Fireman Ricci L. Meyer were killed on Sept. 25, 1976, in a vehicle accident while on a fire run. Constable Robert Murphy was killed on Nov. 11, 1824, from injuries sustained while serving a warrant for assault. Sheriff William Vancamp was killed on Aug. 20, 1923, in Springfield Township while trying to arrest 2 male bank robbers. State Trooper Robert O. Lietzan was killed on March 30, 1969, in the Metamora area by a barricaded male subject firing a rifle from a wooded area. State Trooper Richard T. Gaston was killed on March 3, 1999, on an Indiana Toll road near South Bend while making a routine traffic stop.
