The U-Drop Inn, built in 1936 in Shamrock, Texas, at Route 66 and U.S. 83, became one of Texas's most distinctive roadside landmarks by bringing bold Art Deco design to a café and filling station. Financed by J. M. Tindall from a concept first sketched by John Nunn and developed by architect J. C. Berry, it prospered during Route 66's busiest years and later operated under several names and owners. After decline followed highway bypasses and Route 66's decommissioning, the building was rescued through historic preservation, restored to its original appearance, and remains a museum, visitor center, and enduring symbol of the Route 66 revival.
