The Rev. J.B. Daniel organized this church in 1876 and served as its first pastor. The congregation began with 13 members who met once a month for services. Its first building, a small frame structure, was erected on this block in 1879. That same year, the Women's Missionary Society was established and continues to serve the fellowship. In 1905 a new brick sanctuary was built, and its stained glass windows were transferred to the present church building, completed in 1956. By 1975, membership had steadily grown to about 850.
