Whitney M. Young, Jr., born here, was a civil rights leader and the son of distinguished educator Dr. Whitney M. Young, Sr. He served in the US Army during World War II, graduated from Ky. State College in 1941 and from U. of Minn. in 1947, directed Urban Leagues in Minn. and Neb. from 1947 to 1953, served as dean of the School of Social Work at Atlanta Univ. from 1954 to 1960, and led the National Urban League from 1961 until his death. He devoted his life to overcoming injustice to Blacks and furthering economic progress, helped thousands find employment through the National Urban League, declined a cabinet post in 1968 because he believed he could accomplish more with the League, and was originally buried in Lexington, Ky., with President Nixon delivering the gravesite eulogy, the first civil rights leader so honored.
